STEM students create winning invention.At Streamwood High school students wanted to create a micro generator that uses wind power to light up small lights. They wanted to make a small light to illuminate dark areas like parks and parking lots. The students won there state competition and went on to compete in the nations and could win $200,000. Though they did not win they still earned $25,000 grant for their school. In this article the there was a lot of student centered learning for this whole project. Even one of the students says that with engineering you can solve a lot problems. I believe that the students did as well as they did because it was something that they wanted to build and learn about. Also it is a great way for students to come up with ideas to help their community.

3-d printer presitationDuring Mr. Cowen's presentation, I learned many helpful tips that will help me present my Genius Hour project in January. While he was presenting he used many techniques to keep us listening and not bored. To start out his presentation he pulled up a power point on the board and went through only the first two slides and kept taking and moving and kept us awake. He then would bounce back and fourth between the board and his 3-d printer talking about the different parts and the different materials he used. He then showed us different sites on the internet that we could use for those students who were into drawing. Next while he was taking he handed out things that he made so we all could see and feel what they are like. The way he presented he started at the beginning as if we did not know anything, but the facts he gave us not just about the printer but that sites that he used after listing for a could minutes you felt way more education about 3-d printing. I will try to incorporate all the things I learned from watching from not staying one subject and boring people to move around and ask them questions as well.
The author of this article really has a unique way of looking at what a geniuses means. To this author being a genius does not mean getting a perfect score on your SAT or having the highest IQ. To most people that is what genius means. He asked a group of people what is half of 13 and most said 6.5. But what this author thinks of a genius is all the way you could look at half or 13. In addition to six and one half, by expressing 13 in different ways and halving it in different ways, one could say one-half of thirteen is 6.5, or 1 and 3, or 4, or 11 and 2, or 8, and so on. Their are 8 main key strategies that genius share they are looking at problems in different ways, making their thoughts visible,produce, make novel combinations, force relationships, think in opposites, think metaphorically, and prepare themselves for chance. One of the main things that I can think that I can use they strategies is teaching people. I want to show people how to work on their motorcycles and majority of the people do the same thing over and over. Some times things can take a long time do to. I want to use what I learned in this article and look at the problem a different way that other people and hopefully come up with a better solution for the problem.
There is a lot to be said from learning from your failure. In this article you can really see that all the years in school we never learn from failure because it is taught that it is not acceptable. When students where introduce to the genius hour many students really struggled and did not like it. The idea of doing something on there own really freaked some students out. Most students are used to being told what do to with every assignment. With the idea of learning from failure students had to come up with their own idea and figure out how to create it. The best part of this is if you think your idea is going good at the start and come half way through the school year and it did not turn out the way you wanted. You can learn from what you did wrong and figure out how to improve. That is what I plan to do with my project. I have some great ideas I want to accomplish with my project. One of the things that I think is really going to help it all the information that I put up on this website, I will be trying it out my self to see if it works like it should or fails. Also, come half way through the school year I will see how well this project turned out and fix it for the yest of the school year.
First of all I plan to finish editing my website and finish all the little details before moving on. Then in the next few months I hope to accomplish a lot and get my website up and running well. What I want to do is start from the beginning with the basics teaching people how to ride motorcycles. I plan to unload videos of my self teaching it and other from the internet and right helpful hints that will help. Secondly I want to teach people how to maintain them and care of them. I am very good with maintaining them and will write down and upload videos of all the very important things that should be maintained on motorcycles. Every week I will upload a new tip that everyone should be doing on their motorcycle. After learning the basics I will make a new page just about learning how to race then if people chose too because racing is totally different. With that should keep busy all throughout the next few months.
